database [Feb. 8th, 2008|01:35 pm]

[Current Mood | blank]

OK, folks.  I need a database.  I've been avoiding this for years and it's TIME.  I need to keep track of the people who appear in my dissertation, or may later appear in my dissertation.  It needs to be easy to add and change fields.  It needs to deal well with numbers and also with approximate numbers, date ranges and guesstimates.  It needs to do cross-referencing, so I can also have entries for places.  It needs to deal well with alternate spellings.  I'm not a computer idiot, but neither am I interested in spending a lot of time trying to figure things out, so the help program needs to be, well, helpful.  (Not, for example, like the help program for Excel which you need an advanced degree to understand).  I also need to know someone who uses it who will be willing to help me occasionally.  I'm broke, so it can't be too expensive.

Any ideas?

In case any of you are Dante lovers, there will be a reading of selections from Dante's Comedy, at St. Augustine's Church, 6th Avenue and Sterling Place, Brooklyn, on Sunday May 6, starting at 4:00pm.

"Readings will be in Italian and in translation, there will also be musical interludes by early music players who will perform pieces from Dante's milieu and some contemporary music as well, and many of the readers are poets themselves."

You know, just in case.

[Current Mood | going to bed]

It has been a surprisingly good day, in my apartment, grappling with my chapter, napping, watching tv, listening to NPR, getting food delivered, watching the snow, sleet, rain, perhaps even hail fall outside. Haven't talked to anyone all day, except the Keyspan guy and my neighbor going to do her laundry. And, on top of it being a good day, I can breathe again, so the strategy may be working. We'll see tomorrow.

My garden is beautiful in the snow.

Just went to the grocery store for milk, oj and cereal. Think I might not leave again today. It's not pleasant out. Just going to hole up at home and work on my chapter.

I walk into Starbucks where they provde their employees with health insurance. I buy my tea. I sit down. I then notice that the guy at the next table is here with a stack of mail and papers and a shredder. You know, one you plug into the wall that electronically shreds paper. How weird is that? I love New York.

[Current Mood | VOTE!]
[Current Music |NPR]

So I call my mother this morning to hear what my parents are going to do about Alan Hevesi (the NY State controller who is accused of using state employees to drive his wife around and not reimbursing the state, for those who aren't up to date on local scandals). They have determined that it is better to vote for Hevesi and then if he gets indicted and removed the Democratic governor will replace him whereas if the Republican wins he'll be in and destroy the State pension fund. I say to my mom "But it seems strange to be voting for someone who is almost certainly guilty of corruption and misappropriating state funds." She replies "Not if you're from Virginia." She's lived in NY for so long that sometimes I forget she grew up in a place where they never told you who won the "War between the States."

[Current Mood | happy]

Last night was Halloween, for which I dressed like someone who buys all their clothes at Ann Taylor. It was hard for me, and I had to scrounge around in the bottom of my closet, but I did it.

But more importantly I saw Tami and Manning who are HERE in New York where everyone that I like should be! It was awesome to see them. Manning was dressed up as an adorable (sorry Manning) Frenchie and Tami as something in a crazy pink dress and dark eye-make up with a octopus on her head. Manning and I ate pizza on the street corner and then we zipzagged our way over to Kate's house. I'm super excited that they are back and a little bit of my Paris life -- my favorite part in fact -- is here!

New York is sort of perfect in the fall. Today it was sunny and warm and I spent the morning waking up and then went to the gym, paid $10 for a great massage at street fair, had some jerk chicken, went to the lobby of the Williamsburg Saving Bank, which is amazing, by the way, picked up 2 new bras which I ordered ages ago and am totally excited about, went up to Central Park to meet a friend and walked through the park, down to Times Square, which I suffered through, then ate Turkish food in Hell's Kitchen. Now I'm at home lying on my bed and trying to decide if it's insane to go to sleep right now.

I love New York.

[Current Mood | sick]

I'm lying in bed, it seems like it might be rainy outside or at least cloudy, it's warm in my bed, I have a bad cold which I've had since Monday, and, most importantly, there were 11 people in my house for dinner last night, for my sister's birthday, and once I get out of bed I'm going to have to deal with the very very harsh reality that not a single dish has been done. Not one. And I made Indian food so that's a lot of dishes. Not to mention the fact that we drank wine and champagne so that's a lot of wine glasses. Oh man. Oh man. This is going to be bad.

I miss you! [Sep. 10th, 2006|12:36 am]
[Current Location |home]

I had a lot of people over for dinner. 16, maybe? It was a lot. I made 2 huge things of chili -- one meat and one veggies -- and we had guac and other junk. We ate a lot and drank a lot and hung out in my yard. It was really fun. ButI miss you! I miss Fran telling me what was missing in my chili (although I thought it was really good), I miss helping Manning get drunk, I miss marvelling at Susa's marvellous wardrobe, drunkenly admiring Tami's dreads, watching Courtney adjust her glasses, I miss Agnes telling me something very serious, and most especially I miss Laura doing my dishes.

MISS YOU! Wish you were here!
